State reciprocity status

Medical Cannabis Reciprocity (Will your Va card work in another state?

  • Alabama - They do have a medical program; however, do not accept out state medical cards. Recreational use is illegal.  
  • Alaska - No, Legal to purchase up to 1 ounce of cannabis for recreational purposes.  
  • Arizona - Arizona does recognize out-of-state medical cards. They have specific limits for their program.   Visiting qualifying patients must have a condition on Arizona’s list of qualifying conditions.   You also need to be a non-resident of Arizona or have lived there for less than 30 days. And you need to have a valid medical cannabis card from another state.   If you don’t meet these conditions you have alternative options. You can legally purchase and possess up to one ounce of cannabis for recreational use. https://norml.org/laws/medical-laws/arizona-medical-marijuana-law/
  • Arkansas - Yes, The fee for visiting patients is $50. It is non-refundable and enables you to buy MMJ in the state for 30 days. You have to fill out a visiting patient form. https://www.healthy.arkansas.gov/programs-services/topics/medical-marijuana-faqs  
  • California - Yes, Medical cannabis is legal for adults who are over 21 and have a valid ID. Patients may possess up to 28.5 grams of flower.  
  •  Colorado - No, Remember, however, that recreational cannabis can be purchased in Colorado by anyone over 21 with a valid ID.   
  • Connecticut - No, Reciprocity; You may be able to possess medical cannabis if you stay within the possession limit. But you will not be able to purchase it even as a visiting qualifying patient.
  • Delaware - Yes, Delaware has also offered medical marijuana card reciprocity if you will get approved with DE conditions.   https://www.pot.com/delaware-cannabis-laws/
  • Florida - No, But, if you reside in the state for at least 31 consecutive days in the calendar year you may be a seasonal resident. Seasonal residents are allowed to apply for a temporary MMJ card.
  • Georgia - They are specifically a” medical cannabis” state. They only allow their qualified MMJ patients access to 20 fluid ounces or less of low-THC oil.   Possession of cannabis flower or any other form of cannabis is illegal.   Georgia does not have reciprocity with any other states. They will allow you to possess 20 fluid ounces or less of low-THC oil.   This is allowed if you are in the state for less than 45 days and have a valid card from another state.
  • Hawaii - Yes, Visitors can apply to Hawaii’s medical marijuana program. Those with serious health conditions, like terminal cancer, are fast-tracked, which makes it a bit more sensible for some visitors to use this service during their trip.    https://health.hawaii.gov/medicalcannabisregistry/travel/
  •  Idaho - No (medical and recreational)
  • Illinois - No (medical and recreational)
  • Indiana - No, possession of Marijuana in any form is not at this time legal within the borders of Indiana.
  • Iowa - Yes, If you are traveling with a valid MMJ card from a state that allows the same products as Iowa you are allowed to possess medical marijuana that meets Iowa’s product standards.  https://idph.iowa.gov/omc/For-Law-Enforcement-and-Public-Safety
  • Kansas - No, No program   
  • Kentucky - No, No program   
  • Louisiana - They have medical but do not accept out of state cards and it is not recreationally legal.    
  • Maine - Yes, for medical
  • Maryland - They have medical but do not accept out of state cards and it is not recreationally legal.   
  • Massachusetts - reciprocity when it comes to medical marijuana possession limits.   With an out-of-state medical cannabis card, you can legally possess medical marijuana for up to one ounce.   They don’t recognize any other state’s MMJ cards when it comes to purchasing marijuana.   You can purchase up to one ounce of recreational marijuana if you are 21 or older.
  • Michigan - Yes, Michigan law gives dispensaries the option to choose whether they will accept out-of-state MMJ cards or not. Most medical dispensaries do, to take advantage of a larger consumer base, so it is safe to say that Michigan has reciprocity.
  • Minnesota - No    
  • Mississippi - No    
  • Missouri - Anyone with a valid MMJ card from another state can possess the legal limit Missouri allows its own residents. This is 4 ounces. Recreational is illegal.
  • Montana - Yes     
  • Nebraska - No, No program   
  • Nevada - Yes    
  • New Hampshire - No, Medical marijuana patients from out of state are allowed to possess up to 2 ounces of usable cannabis; however, are not permitted to purchase from local dispensaries.   
  • New Jersey - Yes    
  • New Mexico - Yes    
  • New York - No; However, thanks to the Marijuana Regulation and Taxation Act recreational marijuana use is legal for adults 21 years of age or older.   You can possess up to 3 ounces of cannabis and up to 24 grams of concentrate like oils or edibles. Adults may possess up to five pounds of cannabis at their personal residence.
  • North Carolina - No, No program   
  • North Dakota - No    
  • Ohio - No    
  • Oklahoma - Yes, Out-of-state medical marijuana patients are able to purchase from dispensaries after applying for a temporary license. The temporary license costs $100, takes about 2 weeks to process, and is valid for 30 days with the ability to be renewed. https://omma.us.thentiacloud.net/webs/omma/
  • Oregon - No, Recreational marijuana is legal in the state. Anyone over 21 can purchase cannabis. The possession limits are of one ounce of cannabis flower, 16 ounces of solid infused edibles, 72 ounces of infused liquid, 1 ounce of cannabis concentrates and 16 ounces of cannabis topicals.   
  • Pennsylvania - No, Pennsylvania doesn’t technically offer reciprocity to adults, the law is a little shakier when it comes to minors. Visitors under 18 years of age with MMJ access out of state can have their parent or guardian make dispensary purchases lawfully   — though it is unclear whether dispensaries know or respect this law.    
  • Rhode Island - No (medical or recreationally)
  • South Carolina - No, No program   
  • South Dakota - No; however, Recreational marijuana use is still illegal and they do not have any reciprocity.   However, nonresident cardholders will not be arrested by the highway patrol for the possession of cannabis.   Nor will they seize the cannabis as long as you can present your valid MMJ card. You must also be within possession limits. They are up to 3 ounces of unaltered cannabis.
  • Tennessee - No, No program   
  • Texas - No    
  • Utah - Yes; you have to apply for a non-Utah resident card. https://medicalcannabis.utah.gov/patients/
  • Vermont - Yes, Recreational only   
  • Virginia - No    
  • Washington - No; however, you can purchase recreationally.
  • West Virginia - Does have medical program; however, does not accept out of state cards. Recreational is illegal.  
  • Wisconsin - No, No program   
  • Wyoming -  No, No program    
  • Washington DC - Yes,  you can use your card in DC
